WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's basketball team suffered a narrow 67-64 loss in overtime to visiting Florida State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Mackey Arena on Wednesday. The Boilermakers rallied form 13 points down in the second half to force overtime, but came up short as they drop to 3-3 on the season.
The Boilermakers got off to a slow start, spotting the Seminoles a lead early and red-hot Florida State shooting (.517) carried them to a 34-24 halftime edge. Purdue made just eight-of-28 in the first frame (.286), while Florida State scored 11 second chance points and outscored Purdue 16-6 in the paint. Freshman Bree Horrocks and junior April Wilson played great for the Boilermakers as Horrocks scored six of her career-high eight points in the opening half, while Wilson went to the locker room with seven points and three assists.
The second half was all Boilermakers as charged all the way back and took the lead for the first time with six minutes to play on a layup by junior Hayden Hamby. They went back and forth down the stretch, and when it seemed hope was lost after a three-pointer by Florida State's Morgan Jones gave the Seminoles a 55-52 lead with 38 seconds left. Sophomore Ashley Morrissette revived the Boilermakers with a triple of her own with 26 seconds left and sent the game into five more minutes of play.
Purdue got out to a five-point lead in overtime, going on a 7-0 run after giving up the first bucket. Deep threes from Jones and Maegan Conwright got Florida State back in the game and a runner by Shakayla Thomas put the Seminoles back in front for the final time with just 24 seconds left. The Boilermakers had a nice back-door feed to Morrissette on the other end, which was knocked out of bounds despite calls for a foul from the Purdue bench and Mackey faithful. With 10 seconds left, Purdue inbounded and got another good look from Morrissette, but it was off the mark and Florida State knocked down two free throws to seal the win.
The Boilermakers turned 22 Florida State turnovers into 30 points, and after letting Florida State score 18 second-chance points, had the last seven of the game for the category. Purdue outscored the Seminoles in the paint, 26-24, and connected on a season-best 19-of-23 from the free throw line. Wilson led the Boilermakers with 17 points, five assists and three steals, while five teammates had between seven and nine points. Senior Liza Clemons had seven points and eight rebounds, while classmate Whitney Bays had eight points and seven boards. Morrissette poured in nine points, while Horrocks had eight and Hamby finished with seven.
The Boilermakers head back out on the road this weekend, traveling over to Dayton, Ohio to play the Flyers on Sunday at 2 p.m. in UD Arena.
