WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's basketball team got back to its winning ways on Thursday night, toppling visiting non-conference foe Kansas at Mackey Arena, 61-48. The Boilermakers forced the Jayhawks into 23 turnovers, turning those into 24 points as they evened their record at 4-4 on the season.
The start of game appeared to have shades of last season's matchup in Lawrence, as the two sides traded the lead eight times with seven ties over the first 14 minutes. However, four straight free throws from sophomore Bridget Perry sparked a 12-0 run to put the Boilermakers ahead for good. The Boilermakers used 43.5 percent shooting (10-23) and a 12-for-14 clip at the charity stripe to get off to a great start, and forced 13 Kansas turnovers to overcome a scorching 52.9 percent (9-17) shooting clip.
Kansas knifed into the lead to start the second half, trimming the margin to as few as four points, 44-40 with 12 minutes left to play. The Purdue defense set the tone the rest of the way, giving up just eight points down the stretch and the offense cashed in at the foul line to seal the win.
Senior Whitney Bays led all scorers with 19 points, in addition to six rebounds and a career-high three blocks. Junior April Wilson, Perry and fellow sophomore Ashley Morrissette joined her in double-figures with 13, 13 and 12 points, respectively. Senior Liza Clemons matched Bays with six rebounds, in addition to four assists, two blocks and a career-high four steals, while Wilson and Morrissette had four assists each.
Purdue committed just 13 turnovers for the game, and just four in the second half, while outscoring the Jayhawks off turnovers, 24-8. The Boilermakers also had a 12-0 advantage in second-chance points, holding Kansas without an offensive rebound for 30 minutes of play, and limiting them to only five for the game. Purdue finished 21-of-27 from the free throw line (.778), and assisted on 15 of its 19 made field goals.
Senior Chelsea Gardner led the Jayhawks with an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double, while classmate Natalie Knight had 15 points. Freshman point guard Lauren Aldridge had a game-high eight assists.
The Boilermakers return to action a week from tomorrow, hosting the Basketball Travelers International Invitational in Mackey Arena. Purdue will start tournament action at noon against UC Irvine.
