FREEPORT, Bahamas - The Purdue women's basketball team fell in the championship game of the Freeport Division at the 2014 Junkanoo Jam on Saturday, suffering a 79-59 loss to George Washington. The Boilermakers were outrebounded 43-24 for the game, while the Colonials shot a blistering 50.8 percent (31-61) from the floor.
The Boilermakers had a tough first half, shooting just 25 percent (7-28) and scoring just 19 points as they went to the locker room down, 36-19. They were zero-for-five from behind the arc and just five-of-11 from the free throw line, while turning the ball over nine times. Sophomore Bridget Perry and Ashley Morrissette had the lone bright spots as Perry was two-for-two for a team-high five points, while Morrissette set a career-high with four steals.
Purdue got after it in the second half, but couldn't close the gap on the Colonials. The Boilermakers had their highest-scoring half of the season with 40 points on 12-of-27 shooting, connecting on three threes and hitting 13-of-17 at the free throw line. Junior April Wilson had a huge half, scoring 13 of her game-high 15 in the second period, including 10 straight points for the Boilermakers down the stretch before fouling out. Senior Whitney Bays was the only other Boilermaker in double figures, finishing with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Wilson and Bays were named to the Junkanoo Jam All-Tournament Team, along with George Washington's Chakecia Miller and Jonquel Jones. Jones had 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Miller finished with 14 points, five assists and four steals as the Colonials improved to 4-2 on the year.
Purdue moved to 3-2 with the loss and returns home to face Florida State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Wednesday in Mackey Arena at 7 p.m. (ET).
