MINNEAPOLIS - Sixth-seeded Purdue men's tennis player Mateus Silva advanced to the round of 16 at the B1G Men's Tennis Indoor Championships Saturday while playing at Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center. The third day of action will begin Sunday at 9 a.m. ET with the singles round of 16, quarterfinals and consolation matches scheduled to be played.
After receiving a first-round bye, Silva took the court in the round of 32 against Nebraska's Marc Herrmann. The junior Boilermaker was tested in the first set, taking it in the breaker, 7-6 (3). He cruised in the second set, 6-2, en route to his fourth win of the fall season. Silva will take on Northwestern's Alex Pasareanu in the round of 16.
Sophomore Lucas Dages was not as fortunate, suffering a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 loss to Darius Mackenzie of Wisconsin in the round of 64. He will drop into Sunday's consolations.
Nine of the conference's 12 schools that sponsor men's tennis are competing at the B1G Men's Tennis Indoor Championships: Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin. Illinois, Indiana and Penn State will not be in attendance.
Scoring for the B1G Men's Tennis Indoor Championships main draw singles are two out of three sets and consolation draw singles will be two out of three with a super-tiebreak in lieu of a third set. No-ad scoring will be used for all matches.
