MINNEAPOLIS - The Purdue men's tennis duo of Mateus Silva and Lucas Dages posted a 1-3 mark playing side-by-side at the B1G Men's Tennis Indoor Championships Friday. The entire Flight A and B doubles draws were contested at Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center. Singles will be contested for the next three days, starting Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.
Playing in the 15-team Flight A draw, Silva and Dages, the only doubles team representing the Boilermakers, dropped their opening match, 8-3, to Michigan's Tyler Gardiner and Kevin Wong. In the consolation rounds, the junior and sophomore pair fell in the breaker to Marc Herrmann and Chris Hobgarski of Nebraska, 8-7 (6).
Consolation play continued and Silva and Dages were able to rebound and post an 8-3 victory over Wisconsin's Jose Carranza and John Zordani. They closed out doubles play by being dealt an 8-3 setback by Jake Jacoby and Josh Silverstein of Iowa.
Silva received the No. 6-seed in the 64-player singles draw. He will have a first-round bye and take to the court at 1 p.m. Dages will square off against Darius Mackenzie of Wisconsin in the first round at 11 a.m.
Nine of the conference's 12 schools that sponsor men's tennis are competing at the B1G Men's Tennis Indoor Championships: Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin. Illinois, Indiana and Penn State will not be in attendance.
Scoring for the B1G Men's Tennis Indoor Championships will be an eight game pro-set with tiebreak at 7-all for doubles, main draw singles will be two out of three sets and back draw singles will be two out of three with a super-tiebreak in lieu of a third set. No-ad scoring will be used for all matches.
