WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Gold Team scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth to break a tie score and win a pitcher's duel, 2-1, in the finale of Purdue baseball's Black and Gold Series Saturday afternoon at Alexander Field.

The Gold Team finished off a five-game sweep in the weeklong intrasquad series, outscoring the Black Team 29-14 over the course of the five games.

However, pitching dominated Saturday's rain-delayed finale. Brett Haan worked 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball for Gold, inducing a pair of double plays. The senior did not issue a walk while striking out 10 over 10 1/3 innings in his two starts in the series. Kyle Van Hoeck closed out his third game of the series and was extended for 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief Saturday. The lefty retired 10 of the 12 batters he faced and erased the only hit he allowed with a pickoff. Van Hoeck did not surrender a run over 8 1/3 innings in the series.

Meanwhile, the Black Team did not give up an earned run Saturday. Matt Frawley surrendered just three hits and did not issue a walk over five innings, retiring 14 of the final 15 batters he faced. Alex Lyons worked two innings of one-hit relief.

The Gold Team scored both of its runs thanks in part to aggressiveness on the base paths. After drawing a one-out walk in the top of the ninth, Kyle Johnson stole second and took third when Justin Gubser's throw went into the outfield. Daniel Sander followed with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Consecutive singles by Jack Picchiotti and Johnson in the top of the first put runners on the corners with one out. Picchiotti scored on another throwing error when Johnson stole second.

The Black Team had its chances against Haan but only managed to score on a 6-3 double play with runners on the corners in the fourth inning. Gubser doubled to lead off the frame and Ted Snidanko beat out a bunt for a hit while executing a sacrifice.

Kyle Wood walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth for the Black Team, but was cut down at second on a sac bunt attempt by Gubser. A passed ball put the potential tying run in scoring position with two outs, but Van Hoeck retired Stephen Kalina on a fly ball to right field to close out the win.
