LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska's Jaycie Johnson scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season near the midpoint of the first half and the lone score of the day cost Purdue women's soccer its fifth 1-0 loss to the season Friday afternoon.
The Boilermakers (6-9-1, 2-8 Big Ten) were shut out for the third game in a row, sixth time during their current seven-game losing skid and eighth time in 2014. The five 1-0 losses this year represent the most in program history.
Purdue will need a win Sunday at Iowa, or a draw coupled with an Illinois loss at Maryland to remain alive in the Big Ten Tournament chase.
Johnson scored for the third game in a row and the fourth time in the last five games. In the 20th minute, she gained possession of a pass from Caroline Gray and dribbled around Jordan Ginther to the right to create a shooting lane into a wide open net. Ginther made saves on the Huskers' five other shots on goal Friday.
The Boilermakers had a 9-5 edge in shots at halftime, but were only credited with one shot in the second half. After creating only two shots on goal Friday, Purdue has managed only five shots on goal with its 25 total shots over the last two games.
Nebraska (6-7-2, 2-5-2 Big Ten) had five corner kick opportunities in each half, while limiting the Boilers to just one on the day. The 10 corners Purdue conceded Friday were a season high against. The Huskers improved to 5-3-2 at home this season.
Holly Gregory, Mollie Kuramoto, Mikayla Lasky, Kim Love and Nicole Robertson went the distance among the Purdue field players. Christa Szalach logged 45 minutes to lead the reserves.
The Boilermakers are back in action Sunday at Iowa, their final road game of the season.
