NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Deborah Suarez became the second Purdue women's tennis player to upset Arizona State's 46th-ranked Stephanie Vlad while playing in the final day of the June Stewart Invitational Sunday. Suarez surrendered just one game to the Sun Devil in a dominate 6-1, 6-0 match. The Boilermakers notched two additional singles victories and won one doubles match on the courts of the Currey Tennis Center at Vanderbilt.
Suarez joined teammate Andjela Djokovic in upending Vlad at the June Stewart Invitational. On Friday, Djokovic used a 6-4, 7-6 (0) match to take down the Arizona State junior. Suarez's upending of Vlad marked the second nationally ranked opponent she's taken down in this fall. At the Purdue Invite she defeated No. 110 Marta Morga of Memphis, 6-0, 6-3. The Southwest Ranches, Fla., native sports a 6-3 record in fall competition.
After dropping a 6-2 opening set to the Sun Devils' Kassidy Jump, Djokovic turned her game around and took the next set 6-2 to force a 10-point breaker third. It was just the second time in nine matches played she'd played a decisive third set, but it didn't faze her. The sophomore prevailed 10-4 to remain undefeated at 9-0.
The third Boilermaker to win a singles match was Nicole Robinson. The sophomore scored a straight set 6-2, 6-4 victory against Arizona State's Alex Osborne. Robinson's fall record improved to 5-4 with the win.
After notching their first doubles victory together a day earlier, Suarez and Krisztina Kapitany won their second match side-by-side, beating Ebony Panoho and Alex Osborne of Arizona State, 6-4 (doubles matches on the final day were played to six).
The Purdue women's tennis team will make a quick trip home to West Lafayette before returning to the Volunteer State for the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships hosted by Tennessee in Knoxville Oct. 16-21.
