WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue women's basketball director of operations Terry Kix was named the 2014 Oncology Nursing Society's Cancer Survivor of the Year on Sunday at the Community Cancer Network's (CCN) Carry the Torch Walk. The Boilermakers participated in their fourth annual Carry the Torch event with the CCN, helping raise funds for non-medical needs for cancer patients and their families.
"We are all very fortunate to know Terry and are blessed by the vibrant spirit she brings to the entire Purdue and Greater Lafayette communities," said Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp. "We're all better people because of her presence on our team."
Kix was diagnosed with stomach cancer in the summer of 2012, and spent the majority of the 2012-13 Purdue women's basketball season undergoing chemotherapy and treatment. She spent as much time as possible around the team, serving as an inspiration to the student-athletes, coaching staff and Purdue athletics department, even keeping her spot on the Boilermaker bench for several games during the year.
The CCN Carry the Torch, two-mile walk raises funds for the families of cancer patients, helping with expenses for food, transportation, fuel and more. In 2013, the CCN raised over $100,000 to help the community and looks to exceed that goal this year. For more information visit the CCN homepage.
