SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team posted a combined 12-0 mark in singles and doubles during the first day of the Notre Dame Invitational Friday. The Boilermakers combined for a 6-0 mark in singles and went 4-0 in doubles while playing on the courts of the Courtney Tennis Center.
Daniela Vidal, Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum, Andjela Djokovic and Krisztina Kapitany all prevailed with straight-set victories in singles competition. Together they limited their opponents to just 18 games. Vidal and Bernard-Feigenbaum posted 6-4, 6-2 wins over Notre Dame's Julie Vrabel and Vanessa Nommensen of Tulane, respectively. Djokovic and Kapitany also had mirrored scores of 6-2, 6-1. Djokovic topped Elle Stokes of Louisville and Kapitany defeated Tulane's Meredith Maltby.
A pair of Purdue players rebounded from second set losses en route to victory over their opponents from Notre Dame. Nicole Robinson took a three-setter from Allison Miller, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and in her debut as a Boilermaker, Deborah Suarez took down Molly O'Koniewski, 7-6, 0-6, 7-5.
In doubles action, Bernard-Feigenbaum and Vidal teamed together to shutout the Tulane tandem of Maltby and Nommensen, 8-0, and followed with an 8-4 win against the Fighting Irish team of Mary Closs and Jane Fennelly.
The duo of Djokovic and Suarez opened with an 8-3 decision of Illinois foes Jerricka Boone and Jade Hilton. The sophomore and junior then defeated Allison Miller and O'Koniewski of Notre Dame, 8-6.
Kapitany and Robinson were the third Purdue doubles team competing. They disposed of Jacqui Katz and Naz Karagoz of Tulane, 8-3, and then topped Vrabel and Katherine White of Notre Dame, 8-5.
The three-day event continues Saturday with two rounds of doubles matches and one round of singles matches starting at 10 a.m. ET. One singles match is on the docket for Sunday with action starting at 9 a.m. ET. Teams featured at the event include Illinois, Louisville, Tulane, Akron and host Notre Dame.
