Medinilla to Play for Flight A Singles Title

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's Ricky Medinilla won two matches Saturday to earn a berth in the Flight A singles title match of the Purdue Fall Invitational at the Schwartz Tennis Center. Medinilla is the lone Boilermaker that will play in the championship or consolation championship singles or doubles matches Sunday starting at 9 a.m. ET at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

After receiving a bye in his first match Friday, Medinilla opened his sophomore campaign with a straight-set win over Toledo's Mark Singnil, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Jeff Schorsch of Valparasio took the first semifinal set from Medinilla, 6-3, only to have the Boilermaker rally with 6-4 wins in the second and decisive third sets to punch his ticket to Sunday's finals. The Mexico City, Mexico, native will take on Toledo's Stjepan Sisko in the title match.

Mateus Silva responded from a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Patrick Mayer of Memphis in Flight A consolation play with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Tennessee Tech's Oleksiy Arovin.

Rookie Renan Hanayama also split his singles matches while playing in Flight B. Maik Steiner of Western Michigan dealt Hanayama a 6-2, 6-2 setback to send him into a consolation match against DePaul's Sten Leusink. The Purdue freshman notched the second win of his young career with a 6-3, 6-3 decision.

Matt Bouggy received a bye in his first Flight G consolation match. His next opponent, Bradley Luetschwager of IUPUI, retired in the first set with Purdue leading 5-2.

Both of Boilermaker doubles teams started the day on the championship side of the draw, but dropped into consolations. In Flight A, Medinilla and Silva dropped an 8-5 match to Colton Buffington and Ali Shabib of Cleveland State. The duo rallied down the stretch for an 8-7 (2) win over Butler's Billy Weldon and Sam O'Neill. Hanayama and Bouggy suffered back-to-back losses, an 8-7 (5) decision to Mario Noboa and Sergiu Muresan of Chicago State and 8-3 to Matt Hamilton and Andrew Cahn of Western Michigan.

Six flights of singles competition are using the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recommended NCAA singles format and three flights of doubles are playing an eight game pro-set with no-add scoring during the three-day event.

Teams represented at the Purdue Fall Invitational include: Butler, Case Western, Chicago, Chicago State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky, Iowa, IUPUI, Marquette, Memphis, Tennessee Tech, Toledo, UW Green Bay, Valparaiso and Western Michigan.
