WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women took second at the Indiana Intercollegiates on Friday, while the men finished fourth at the 74th annual event. Matthew McClintock was the Boilermakers' top finisher on either side, as the junior took second with an 8,000-meter time of 24:45.2.

"The women are definitely improving just like we wanted to see," assistant coach Jeff Kent said. "I thought we did a great job stacking up against IU and the rest of the field. The supporting cast was nothing short of spectacular, and I was very pleased with their performance overall.

"I thought Matt McClintock ran a great race. He set the tone, as he is used to doing. We are preparing for things down the road, and I think Matt did a great job. I thought the rest of the team could have run better, but they know what they need to do. We'll be ready to go at Notre Dame, no doubt about it."

The Purdue women were led by junior Katie Hoevet. She took third in the Big State race with a time of 17:33.8 in the 3-mile race, just under 24 seconds behind the winner, Amanda Behnke from Indiana. Michelle Potter was the Boilermakers' second finisher. Potter took sixth overall with a time of 17:36.6, while Hope Schmelzle was Purdue's third finisher with a time of 17:39.5, good for ninth.

Kiara McIntosh was the fourth scorer for the Boilermakers. The sophomore took 12th with a time of 17:56.5. Gabrielle Broschard rounded out the scoring with a 13th place finish and a time of 17:57.6.

In the women's open race, freshman Abigail Hostetler ran her best race as a Boilermaker, as she won with a time of 18:02.1. That time was the best in the race by 8.5 seconds, and would have placed 19th overall in the championship race. Kendall Hacker was Purdue's second finisher with a third-place time of 18:13.6, while Brooke Kline was Purdue's third finisher in the open 3-mile. She took fifth with a time of 18:24.6.

"I thought Abi definitely made a big breakthrough after winning the overall title in the open race," Kent added. "I was really pleased with her. If you translate her time into a 5k, I think we would be really pleased with her time."

In the men's championship 8k, McClintock repeated his runner-up finish from last season. McClintock finished 12.4 seconds behind three-time champion, John Mascari from Indiana State. Purdue's next three finishers came in together. David Dalton took 16th with a time of 25:59.6, while Caleb Kerr was 17th, crossing the line in 26:01.9. Tyler Wynn took 18th with a time of 26:02.8, while Harlow Ladd rounded out the scoring with a 20th place finish and time of 26:04.5.

The Purdue women finished with a team score of 43. Indiana won with 19 points. IUPUI was third with 105 points. On the men's side, Purdue took fourth with 73 points. Indiana was the team champion with 29 points. IUPUI took second with 56 points, while Indiana State was third with 64.

The Boilermakers are off next weekend, before returning to competition on Oct. 3 at the Notre Dame Invitational.
