WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team won four matches on the first day of the Fifth Annual Purdue Fall Invitational Friday at the Schwartz Tennis Center. A trio of Boilermakers are scattered in the singles draws, while a pair of doubles teams split matches.
Saturday's two rounds of singles and one round of doubles will be split between the Schwartz Tennis Center and Cumberland Tennis Courts in West Lafayette with an 8 a.m. ET start. Singles Flights A, B, C, D and E along with doubles Flights A and B will be played at the Schwartz Tennis Center. Cumberland Tennis Courts will contest singles Flights F and G and doubles Flight C.
Freshman Renan Hanayama got off to a winning start as a Boilermaker with a 7-5, 7-5 decision over Jorg van der Vloet of Cleveland State in Flight B action. The freshman is slated for an 8 a.m. match against Western Michigan's Maik Steiner.
Matt Bouggy began the day with a straight-set 6-0, 6-4 victory over Chicago State's Luis Ulloa in Flight G, but was tripped up by Jimmy Beckwith of Western Michigan in his next match, 6-2, 6-0. He received a bye in his first consolation match and will take to the court at 2:30 p.m.
A first-round bye in Flight A for Ricky Medinilla sends him into the second round for an 8 a.m. battle versus Mark Singnil of Toledo. Mateus Silva, who is also in Flight A, dropped the first match of his junior campaign, a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Dave Bacalla of Valparasio. He will meet Memphis' Patrick Mayer in consolation action at 8 a.m.
The Flight A doubles team of Medinilla and Silva prevailed in the breaker, 8-7 (5), to get past Alex Toliver and Pat O'Neill of IUPUI in their first match, but were dealt an 8-5 loss by Cleveland State's Colton Buffington and Ali Ahabib in their next match.
Boggy and Hanayama went down to the wire in both of their matches in Flight B. The Boilermaker duo took their first match from Will Drougas and Andrew Kamarov of Case Western, 8-7 (5). They suffered a defeat of the same score at the hands of Chicago State's Mario Noba and Sergiu Muresau.
Six flights of singles competition are using the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recommended NCAA singles format and three flights of doubles are playing an eight game pro-set with no-add scoring.
Teams represented at the Purdue Fall Invitational include: Butler, Case Western, Chicago, Chicago State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky, Iowa, IUPUI, Marquette, Memphis, Tennessee Tech, Toledo, UW Green Bay, Valparaiso, Vincennes and Western Michigan.
