AUBURN, Ala. - The Purdue softball team felt to the homestanding Auburn Tigers 8-0 to wrap up the Boilermakers' stay at the Wilson/DeMarini Classic on Sunday.
The Tigers put up eight runs on nine hits and two errors, while Purdue managed four hits in the contest. Senior Andie Varsho, junior Ashley Burkhardt, sophomore Mary Gooding and freshman Kristen Hoppman accounted for the hits.
Lexi Davis struck out three in the complete game victory for Auburn, while sophomore Lilly Fecho (3-4) struck out two in an inning and two thirds in the loss. Junior Lexy Moore issued one strikeout in two and a third innings of relief work.
The Tigers struck for three runs in the first, three in the second and two in the fourth.
Varsho led off the game with a single and was sacrificed over to second, but was caught stealing. Burkhardt added a single in the inning, but that was nullified by a fielder's choice play.
A walk and a hit batsman set up an RBI single for Auburn's first run. Another single brought in two more.
In the second inning, the Tigers combined four hits and an error for three scores. A leadoff single and a one-out double made it 4-0. A single and a fielding error plated another, while a sacrifice fly put Auburn ahead 6-0.
Gooding singled in the third, while senior Maia Monchek drew a two-out walk, but a fielder's choice play ended the scoring threat.
Senior Lindsey Rains reached on an error in the fourth and Hoppman followed with a single, but a double play wrapped that inning.
A two-run home run by Kasey Cooper in the fourth capped the scoring.
The Boilermakers went down in order in the fifth to end the game.
Purdue (5-7-1) return to the field on Friday at the Easton Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where the team will kick off action against Florida State and Alabama.
