MADISON, Wis. (AP) - D.J. Byrd scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half and Purdue upset No. 17 Wisconsin 69-56 Sunday afternoon.
Terone Johnson added 16 points for the Boilermakers (14-15, 7-9 Big Ten), who had lost three straight road games and four of five overall. Purdue took control with a 21-3 run in the second half during which Byrd had nine points and Johnson eight.
Jared Berggren scored 13 points and Ryan Evans and Sam Dekker had 10 apiece for the Badgers (20-9, 11-5), who had won six of their previous seven.
The loss left Wisconsin barely clinging to title hopes in the tightly contested Big Ten: The Badgers need to win their final two games, Thursday at No. 9 Michigan State and next Sunday at Penn State, and get a lot of help to claim a share of their first conference championship since 2007-08.
Byrd hit three 3-pointers and Johnson added four baskets in the decisive 21-3 run as Purdue pulled away, silenced the crowd at Kohl Center and won here for the first time since January 2009.
The Badgers, who had won each of their previous three games by at least 20 points, missed five of six shots from the field and committed four turnovers in the 7:31 stretch as they fell behind 54-45.
That was a common theme in the second half: The Badgers shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, but hit just 29.6 percent of their shots (8 of 27) after halftime. Wisconsin missed its final 18 3-pointers, including all 12 of its attempts in the second half.
Another 3-pointer by Byrd with 6:14 to play extended Purdue's lead back out to nine at 59-50, and the Boilermakers scored 10 of the final 16 points.
Evans had two jumpers and Dekker and George Marshall added 3-pointers in a 10-0 run that gave the Badgers a 12-point lead at 29-17, but the Boilermakers came back to trail 36-31 at halftime.
Berggren then scored Wisconsin's first six points after the break, with his driving layup putting the home team ahead by nine at 42-33.
Purdue answered again - and then some.
Purdue's Sandi Marcius scored eight of his 10 points in the second half as he scored in double figures for just the second time this season - he had 11 against Hofstra back on Nov. 11.
It was the first time in Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan's 12-year tenure that the Badgers lost on their senior day.
Evans, one of five seniors honored before and after the game, started and extended his streak to 132 consecutive games played despite suffering a right knee sprain in practice Thursday.
