WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's cross country team opened its season in solid fashion on Friday, capturing the first four individual placings at the Great American Legends Race, hosted by the Boilermaker at the Purdue Varsity Cross Country Course. Sophomore Camille Buscomb was the Boilermakers' top finisher on the day, taking the top spot in the race with a 5K time of 18:07.63.

Buscomb's time was just over 38 seconds faster than last year's opener, and came in extremely windy conditions on the Boilermakers' home course. She was followed in the top four finishers by junior Stephanie Bonk, sophomore Kelly McCurdy and junior Kara Conflenti, who all crossed the line in under 18:35. Bonk turned in the fastest opening time of her collegiate career, finishing second in 18:26.11, while McCurdy followed suit, taking third in 18:31.27. Conflenti not only topped her fastest opening time, but also set a new career best in the 5K, crossing the line in 18:34.92. All four Purdue harriers posted times faster than 2009's top opening mark.

Ball State's Allison Bishel broke up the Boilermaker parade, taking fifth place with a time of 18:37.01, but Purdue accounted for the next four finishers in turn with junior Kyla Chapman, freshman Autumn Beachy, sophomore Alice Feslier Holmes and senior Nan Hammel. Chapman smashed her career best 5K by almost two minutes, turning in a mark of 19:10.61, while Beachy finished her first collegiate 5K in 19:15.03.

The Purdue women will return to action in two weeks as the Boilermakers host the 2010 Indiana Intercollegiate Championships.
