WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The fourth-ranked Purdue women's golf team is in third place after the first round of play at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R. The Boilermakers carded a team total of 296 (71-72- 75-78) on Sunday and trail 10th-ranked Georgia by four strokes and No. 9 Alabama by one.
Purdue is the host of the eighth annual tournament and the defending champions. The event is being played at the Trump International Golf Club on the Championship Course, a par-72, 6,219-yard venue designed by Tom Kite.
Purdue junior Thea Hoffmeister is leading the field after firing an opening round 66 (-6), her career-low round and the lowest by a Boilermaker this season. Hoffmeister is one of seven golfers competing as individuals, so her round does not count toward Purdue's team total. Alabama's Jennifer Kirby is in second place after recording a 67 on Sunday.
The Boilermakers were led by junior Numa Gulyanamitta's one-under par 71, which puts her in fifth place. Maude-Aimee LeBlanc is tied for sixth after carding an even-par 72. Sophomore Kishi Sinha fired a 75 in the first round and is tied for 22nd while freshman Laura Gonzalez Escallon is tied for 44th after opening with a 78. Freshman Paula Reto carded a 79 in the first round and was the non-counting score for Purdue. She is tied for 50th.
Kent State is in fourth place with a team total of 299 and Oklahoma State is fifth after recording a 300.
Round two begins Monday with a shotgun at 7:10 a.m. ET and the third and final round will begin at 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday. Live scoring is not available, but full results can be found at the conclusion of each round at purduesports.com.
