CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The Purdue men's golf team split a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating Minnesota in semifinal action and falling to Northwestern in the finals to take second place at the Big Ten Match Play Championship.
The Boilermakers opened the day with a convincing 4.5-1.5 win over Minnesota in the semis, not losing an individual match on the way to their finals berth.
Juniors David Gersztein (2 up), Erich Johnston (2&1) and Nakarintra Ratanakul (1 up) earned outright victories in the win over the Golden Gophers, while junior Maximo Kopp and sophomores Tyler Duncan and William Sjaichudin halved their matchups.
In the afternoon session, the Boilers fell victim to a 6-0 sweep by Northwestern in the tournament's championship match.
Purdue will return to action next week when it hosts the 2010 Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The 15-team field will compete from Sunday-Tuesday at the par-72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Country Club.
