WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team has four athletes still in their main singles draw after wrapping up day one of the Purdue Fall Invitational on Saturday at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

Senior P.J. Rose, who won the Flight A singles title at last weekend's Wildcat Fall Invitational, continued his unbeaten start to the 2009 fall schedule. The Highland, Ill., native earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Iowa's Austen Kauss before defeating Butler's Bryce Warren 6-2, 6-4 to move into Sunday's semifinal.

Fellow senior Branko Kuzmanovic and sophomore Thomas Wilson also moved into the Flight A semifinal and will face each other on the opposite side of the bracket from Rose. Kuzmanovic, playing in his first tournament of the fall, defeated Lenz Theodor from Butler 6-4, 6-3 in the first round and Tom Mroziewicz from Iowa 7-6 (3), 7-5 in the quarterfinal. Wilson automatically advanced out of the first round when his opponent was unable to play because of injury and then defeated Marquette's Otavio Perim 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinal.

Sophomore Matt Manasse played into the semifinal of Flight B. The Boca Raton, Fla., native was pushed the distance, but took down Andrew Bayliss from Butler 6-1, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (8) in the first round. Manasse then handled Iowa's Connor Gilmore 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the semifinal. Fellow sophomore Jan-Frans Engelbrecht won his first round match 6-1, 6-3 over Butler's David Dolins, but then fell to Marquette's Drake Kakar 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (4).

The Boilermakers also advanced two doubles teams to the semifinal round of that bracket. Kuzmanovic and Foley earned an 8-5 victory over Gilmore and Mitch Beckert in the first round before defeating Kakar and Jose Munoz 8-1. Rose and junior Eric Ramos began their trek to their semifinal match with an 8-3 win over Brandon and Andrew Bayliss and continued with an 8-6 quarterfinal decision over Marquette's Jacob Straus and J.G. Crowley.

Junior Paul Foley won his first round match in Flight A when he defeated Jeff Rutherford from Eastern Illinois 6-2, 6-4. Foley then fell in the quarterfinal when Butler's Benji Raynauld earned a 6-3, 6-3 win to become the only non-Boilermaker in the Flight A semifinal round. Freshman Billy Heuer, seeing his first collegiate action, was defeated by Mroziewicz in a three-set thriller 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (7). Heuer bounced back with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Theodor in the consolation bracket.

Manasse and Engelbrecht were defeated 8-4 in the first round by Butler's Zach Ervin and Chris Herron. Wilson and Heuer also saw their run through the bracket ended early when they fell 9-8 (5) to Rutherford and Jamie Firth from Eastern Illinois.

The Purdue Fall Invitational concludes Sunday with the semifinal and final rounds in each draw. Action begins at 9 a.m. ET at the Schwartz Tennis Center. Admission is free.
