Purdue Wraps Up Cissie Leary Memorial

The Purdue women's tennis team wrapped up its opening tournament of the fall as the Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational ended Sunday in Philadelphia.

Purdue had four of its six players advance to the third round in the main singles draw. Senior Michelle Sammons, who was the No. 4 seed for the tournament, advanced the furthest before being defeated in the quarterfinal round by Yale's Emma Brook.

Junior Bhavani Tirumurti, playing in her first competition as a Boilermaker, was eliminated in the third round after earning a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sydney Clark in the second round. Sophomores Anna Dushkina and Jennifer Rabot also were defeated in the third round. Dushkina put together a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Lucie Pazderova of Temple in the second round, while Rabot earned a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2 win to advance to the third round.

Sophomore Kay Kay Magi strung together three victories in the consolation bracket before falling in the final to Yale's Stevi Peterelli. Fellow sophomore Remi Martin defeated Katharina Mattig of Temple before falling to Peterelli in the semifinal of the consolation bracket.

Rabot and Sammons made up Purdue's most successful doubles duo during the weekend as they advanced to the semifinals of the draw with consecutive 8-1 wins before falling. The other two duos fell in the quarterfinals. Dushkina and Martin earned two 8-4 wins before being defeated, while Magi and Tirumurti won 9-8 (3) and 8-0 in the first two rounds.

Purdue returns to action Friday at the Michigan Invitational. The three-day tournament is being held at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
