OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The ninth-ranked Purdue women's golf team fired a 301 and is tied for ninth place after the second round at the 2009 NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Owings Mills, Md. The Boilermakers improved by five shots on the day from the opening round are in a three-way tie with Alabama and Virginia heading into Thursday.

"We're not particularly excited about our first two rounds," head coach Devon Brouse said. "But the important thing is that we bounced back today. I was a little worried about that after kind of a discouraging day yesterday. This is a golf course that any team with a couple good scores can really move up the leaderboard. It's a challenging golf course, so `can we play ourselves back in the tournament tomorrow?', we hope so and that is what we are trying to do."

No. 2 UCLA is in first place after two rounds with a score of 589 (296-293, +13). The Bruin's Maria Jose Uribe took the individual lead after firing a six-under par 66 on Wednesday. She is three-under for the tournament at 141 (75-66). USC is in second place at 596 (+20) and Denver, who led after the first round is third with a total of 598 (294-304).

The 72-hole tournament, being played on the par-72, 6,443-yard Caves Valley Golf Course, will continue on Thursday and the fourth and final round is Friday, May 22.

On Wednesday, Purdue started from hole No. 10 with tee times beginning at 8:50 a.m. Two-time All-American Maria Hernandez continues to lead Purdue. She fired an even-par 72 in the second round and has a two-round total of 146. The senior from Pamplona, Spain, is a national player of the year candidate and is currently tied for sixth as an individual.

Sophomores Thea Hoffmeister and Junthima Gulyanamitta each carded 76s in the second round. Hoffmeister matched her first round score and is tied for 37th with a two-round total of 152. The Berlin, Germany, native had three bogeys in her first nine holes, but birdies on holes No. 1 and 3 allowed her to play just one-over par for the last nine.

Gulyanamitta birdied both par-3s on the back nine, which Purdue played first today, besting her day one total by four strokes. The native of Thailand sits in a tie for 79th at 156 with two rounds to play.

Maude-Aimee LeBlanc recorded a 77 on Wednesday and is tied for 48th with a two-round total of 153. The Sherbrooke, Quebec, native earned the Boilermakers only eagle on the day, scoring a three on the par-five 17. She was one-under par when making the turn, but double-bogeyed No. 3 and bogeyed four of her final six holes to finish five over-par for the round.

Freshman Vaishavi Sinha from Noida, India, improved by five strokes in the second round with an 83. She is in 124th place with a two-round total of 171. The best four individual scores in each round count toward Purdue's team total.

"It's important to be within striking distance," Brouse said. "We don't control the other teams but I know that we can play better than we did the first two rounds. Let's hope we get stronger with every day and every round, get to know this golf course a little better and take advantage of that."

The Boilermakers will tee off from hole No. 10 beginning at 12 p.m. ET on Thursday and will be paired with Alabama and Duke.
