WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue men's golf team concluded play on Sunday with a cumulative score of 876 (+12) at the Boilermaker Invitational. The Boilermakers used a third round score of 292 (+4) after shooting a 288(E) and 296 (+8) in rounds one and two. The Boilers finished in seventh place in the field of 18.
The tournament, which Purdue is hosting, is being played at the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The course is a par-72, 7,162-yard venue and will be extended to 7,465 yards for tomorrow's final round. Kampen played host to last year's Men's NCAA Championships.
Illinois won the tournament with a score of 855 (-9). After two rounds of play, Penn State was leading. However, the Illini used a 284 (-4) second round to finish one stroke better than the Nittany Lions. Chris DeForest, who finished in third place, led Illinois with a three-round score 209 (-7). Kevin Foley of Penn State and Dan Woltman of Wisconsin shared medalist honors with scores of 207 (-9). Woltman used a final round low-score of 67 (-5) to move into a tie with Foley who shot a final round 72 (E). Indiana's Jorge Campillo, who came into the tournament as the second ranked individual in the country, shot a cumulative 212 (-4) to finish in fifth. Micigan State's Jack Newman, who competed in this year's Masters, shot a cumulative 222 (+6) to finish in a tie for 37th.
Tyler Duncan and William Sjaichudin led the Boilers with scores of 217 (+1), which placed them in a tie for 12th. Duncan used a team-low round of 68 (-4) in round one while Sjaichudin used consecutive 73s (+1) followed by a 71 (-1) in round three. Other Boilermakers included: Tom Oliver who shot a 222 (+6), Maximo Kopp who shot a 225 (+9), and David Gersztein who shot a 230 (+14). All Boilermakers contributed at least one round to the team's final total. Nakarintra Ratanakul and Erich Johnston competed as individuals this weekend. Ratanakul shot a 232 (+16), which placed him in a tie for 76th. Johnston finished in a tie for 30th with a 221 (+5).
This was Purdue's last tournament before they compete in the Big Ten Championships on May 1-3. Penn State will host the tournament. Check purduesports.com for previews, recaps, and results.
