WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After registering just one hit against the Iowa on Saturday, the Boilermaker bats remained cold on Sunday as Purdue fell 4-0 to the Hawkeyes in a no-hitter.
The Boilermakers had four base runners in the game on three walks and a hit by pitch, but couldn't manage a base hit or a score. For their part, the Hawkeyes posted four runs on eight hits and one Purdue miscue.
Brittany Weil struck out seven in the complete game no-hitter for Iowa, while sophomore Suzie Rzegocki (16-9) was saddled with the loss for Purdue, despite striking out five in six innings.
The Hawkeyes scored first, plating a run on two hits in the second inning. With runners at second and third after a hit batsman, a single and stolen base, Sam Heinzman picked up the RBI with a single through the right side. Heinzman stole second to put two in scoring position again, but the Boilermakers got a putout at home on a fielder's choice play, then forced to fly out to escape further damage.
Purdue got its first base runner when sophomore Beth Cinadr was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the second. A strikeout, however, left her stranded.
Iowa tacked on another run in the fourth as Katie Brown launched a solo shot to left center to start the stanza. A throwing error allowed the Hawkeyes another base runner, but Rzegocki struck out the next batter and handled a ground out to end the inning.
The Boilermakers had their biggest scoring threat in the bottom of the fourth as senior Katie Mitchell and junior Jenna Alexander drew back-to-back one-out walks. A strike out and pop up squelched the threat.
The Hawkeyes put up two runs on two hits in the sixth to cap the scoring. Katie Keim doubled in a run, after a two-out walk. Pinch hitter Jenny Schuelke added another with a single to left. Rzegocki issued her fifth strikeout of the game to get out of the innning.
Junior Liane Horiuchi drew a leadoff walk in the sixth, but the Boilermakers could not capitalize as the next batter grounded into a double play and a strikeout brought the Hawkeyes to bat.
Senior Dana Alcocer took over in the circle for Purdue to start the seventh, but Iowa threatened once again with two hits. The Boilermaker defense held strong, however, forcing the Hawkeyes to strand both runners.
The Boilermakers went down in order on three ground outs to end the game.
Purdue (20-14, 5-5 Big Ten) returns to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday when the team welcomes Ball State to the Varsity Softball Complex for a single game. It is Girl Scout Day at the ball park.
