WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's and women's track and field teams continued their impressive streak on Saturday, winning their 14th consecutive Gene Edmonds Cup and defeating Indiana State University, 179-139. The Boilermakers added a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying marks on the day, and improved two others, pushing their team total to seven for the year.
The Purdue men bested the Sycamores 87-72, while the Boilermaker women posted a 92-67 advantage. The Boilermakers' only blemish was an 83-77 men's loss to ninth-ranked Louisville as the Purdue women completed the sweep over the No. 25 Cardinals, 90-63. The Boilermakers won two events on the women's side, and seven events on the men's.
Adding their names to Purdue's NCAA provisional lists were seniors Ranay Harvey and Ben Pax. Harvey clocked a career-best time of 8.43 and is now second all-time at Purdue in the women's 60-meter hurdles, while Pax cleared the provisional standard of 5.20 meters (17-00.75) to top the men's pole vault. Both senior Ben Harpenau and sophomore Josh Hembrough made their way up the national lists as Harpenau tossed a career-best of 19.85 meters (65-01.50) to win the men's weight throw, climbing to seventh in the country, while Hembrough sped to an impressive time of 7.81 in the men's 60-meter hurdles, bumping himself to third in the country in his event.
Junior Kristin Phillips had the only other event victory for the Purdue women on the day, topping the field in the 3,000-meter run with career-best time of 9:53.95. The Boilermaker women saw several other career-bests on the day, including sophomore Emily Breslin's mark of 1.70 meters (5-07.00) in the high jump, and rookie Elizabeth Stover's leap of 3.81 meters (12-06.00) in the pole vault. Junior standout Ashlee Lengacher came up just shy of her career best, and the third-fastest time in school history, in the women's 600-meter run, finishing second in 1:32.77.
On the men's side, four others followed Pax, Hembrough and Harpenau's lead, winning their respective events. Freshmen Mike Willey and Josh Lee captured the men's 200- and 400-meter dash titles, respectively as Willey notched a time of 22.07 and Lee posted a mark of 49.38. Freshman Jacob Palmer and senior Stephen Bach followed suit in the 600- and 800-meter runs as Palmer clocked a career-best time of 1:21.05, while Bach sped to a season-best mark of 1:53.94. Willey and Palmer later teamed with sophomore Andy Dunn and freshman Gabe Pirtle to win the men's 4x400-meter relay, completing the race with a time of 3:19.01. The Boilermakers' got a season-best effort out of sophomore Bill Hardcastle in the men's shot put, as he took home second place with a mark of 17.21 meters (56-05.75).
The Boilermakers continue their indoor season next weekend, heading north to South Bend, Ind., for Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational.
