CARMEL, Ind. - The sixth-ranked Purdue women's golf team blew away the competition in the 2008 Indiana Invitational at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. The Boilermakers finished in first place with a 12-under par 852 (279-282-291) and were 42 strokes ahead of second-place Ohio State (295-300-299=894).

"We are always happy to win, but the players know the areas that they have to improve for the postseason," head coach Devon Brouse said. "Our goal is to be ready every week and to play better each tournament. The competition will only continue to get tougher."

Freshman Junthima Gulyanamitta won the first individual title of her young career with a three-round total of seven-under par 209 (67-68-74). She recorded a two-over par 74 on Tuesday, but her seven stroke lead over the field heading into the final round was more than enough cushion. She finished four strokes ahead of teammates Maria Hernandez and Maude-Aimee Leblanc who tied for second place with three-under par 213s.

"It feels good to win," Gulyanamitta said. "I'm having fun with my golf right now. I'm playing well, but I can play better and will keep practicing to improve."

LeBlanc fired a 70 in the final round and would have shot 68 had she not incurred a two-stroke penalty on hole No. 8. The freshman from Quebec had five birdies on Tuesday, including birdies on each of the two par threes on the front nine. Hernandez, Purdue's highest ranked individual with a No. 8 ranking by Golfweek, shot an even-par 72 in the final round to earn a three-under par 213 (72-69-72) and the tie for second.

Junior Christel Boeljon finished seventh with a 217. The native of the Netherlands carded a 75 in the third round after recording one-under par 71s in the first two rounds. Boeljon, who is ranked No. 17 by Golfweek, had her parents and brother on hand to watch her play for the first time in her collegiate career.

Purdue's Carolyn Mess carded an 81 in the third round and finished tied for 62nd with a 242 (77-84-81).

Illinois finished third with an 898 (294-307-297), while Texas was fourth with an 899 (302-300-297) and UNLV was fifth with a 900 (299-291-310). The Boilermakers captured the top three spots individually and Cathryn Bristow of Oregon was fourth with a one-under par 215 (76-74-65).

The tournament was hosted by Indiana, who finished eighth out of 15 teams, and was held at Crooked Stick, the site of the 2005 Solheim Cup and the 2009 U.S. Senior Open. The course is a par-72 that played 5,938 yards for the tournament.

The Boilermakers are back in action April 25 to 27 at the Big Ten Championships which will be played at Penn State in University Park, Pa.
