UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The sixth-ranked Purdue women's golf team is in first place at the Big Ten Championships after two rounds on Friday. All 11 conference schools are competing at Penn State University's Blue Course in University Park, Pa., on April 25, 26 and 27.
The Boilermakers shot an opening round 298 and trailed defending champion Michigan State by six strokes, but came back in the afternoon with a 288 to lead the tournament by nine strokes with a team total of 586 with two rounds to play.
Purdue has three individuals in the top four as junior Christel Boeljon is in first place with a one-under par 143. She fired a 73 in the first round followed by a 70 in the afternoon and is the only golfer below par after two rounds. Junior Maria Hernandez is tied for second with a plus-two 146 after carding a 75 and then a 71.
Freshman Maude-Aimee Leblanc is in fourth place after firing a 74 in the morning, followed by a 73 for a three-over par 147. Freshman Junthima Gulyanamitta recorded the final counting scores with a 76-74 for a two-round total of 150 which has her tied for 12th.
After two rounds, Michigan State is in second place with a 595, Ohio State is in third with a 600, Wisconsin is fourth with a team score of 606 and Indiana is in fifth with a total of 608.
In the Big Ten Championships, each school has six golfers competing and the top four scores count. Junior Stephanie Oukeo is tied for 27th after recording a 77 in each round for a 10-over par 154. Junior Carolyn Mess carded a 79 in both rounds and is tied for 41st.
