JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Boilermaker softball team wrapped up a sweep of the Jacksonville Dolphins with a 3-1 win in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
Purdue scored its three runs on 10 hits and one error, while allowing Jacksonville one run on seven hits. Freshman Beth Cinadr, junior Katie Mitchell and junior Christina Trauger each tallied two hits in the contest, while four other Boilermakers posted hits.
Freshman Suzie Rzegocki (6-2) earned the victory for Purdue, striking out two in six innings of work, while junior Dana Alcocer picked up the save by tossing the final inning of the contest. Brittany Abbott (1-1) was charged with the loss for JU after tossing just two innings.
It took the Boilermakers just three at-bats to get on the scoreboard. Cinadr led off the game with a double to left center. A one-out single up the middle by junior Candace Curtis was enough to drive in the run. The inning continued as Mitchell walked and both runners advanced on a pass ball, but a pair of grounders kept Purdue from adding to its tally.
JU answered with a run on a hit in the bottom of the first. A fielder's choice and a walk gave the Dolphins runners at first and second with two outs. A Beth Glasscock single up the middle made it a tie game.
Purdue added another run on three singles and a ground ball to short in the second. Senior Tara Palmer, Trauger and junior Kelly Miller each posted a single to load the bases. Sophomore Ashley Barr picked up the RBI with the one-out grounder. A ground ball to third stranded two.
The Boilermakers went up 3-1 with a run on a hit in the fourth. Trauger led off the inning with a single to short. A wild pitch and two grounders plated the run.
The Dolphins threatened in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with one out, but the Boilermaker defense recorded a fly out and a ground out to maintain the two-run lead.
JU started the fifth with a single, but Mitchell snagged a pop up and flipped the ball to Miller at first who barehanded it for a double play to nullify the runner.
The Boilermakers (17-6) return to action on Friday when they compete in the Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla.
