WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's and women's track and field teams captured their 13th straight Gene Edmonds Cup title on Saturday, toppling annual rival Indiana State University (ISU), 200-123. The Boilermakers also topped the tri-meet standings, earning 290.5 points ahead of ISU (205 points) and Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) (134.5 points).
The win was the biggest in recent Gene Edmonds Cup history for the Boilermakers, exceeding the 65-point win over the Sycamores in 2002.
Senior Leah Kincaid took down her second school record in a week, completing the women's 60-meter hurdles in 8.25 seconds. Her time is the sixth-fastest in the country (entering the weekend) and fractured her previous mark by 0.06 seconds. She also topped the women's long jump for the third straight meet, leaping 5.96 meters (19-06.75), and led the field in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.62. Kincaid rounded out her busy day with a third-place showing in the women's triple jump, marking 11.22 meters (36-09.75).
Other top placers for the Purdue women included senior Astin Steward and freshman Lindsey McKnight. Steward eclipsed the NCAA provisional standard and won the women's 20-lb. weight throw for the third straight meet, hurling it 20.29 meters (66-07.00), while McKnight topped the 600-meter run and the high jump. She crossed the line in 1:35.86 in the 600, and cleared 1.63 meters (5-04.25) in the high jump.
Sophomore Stacey Wannemacher led the field in the women's shot put with a throw of 15.29 meters (50-02.00), and sophomore Mallory Peck took home the pole vault crown, clearing 3.90 meters (12-09.50). The Purdue women's distance group had a solid showing as well, claiming the top five spots in the mile run with a slew of personal records, led by freshman Kristina Krasich's time of 4:57.10, while sophomore Katie Morrical won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:02.83. The women capped off the day with a win in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:52.60.
On the men's side, the Boilermakers won nine of the 15 events on the day, including 1-2 finishes in six events. Purdue dominated the throws, as senior Tyler Miller and freshman Billy Hardcastle topped the shot put, while sophomore Jonathan Pullum and junior Ben Harpenau paced the 35-pound weight throw. Miller hit a season-best of 17.48 meters (57-04.25), followed by Hardcastle's career-best of 17.33 meters (56-10.25), while Pullum exceeded the 20-meter mark for the third straight week with a throw of 20.04 meters (65-09.00) and Harpenau hit 18.73 (61-05.50).
Freshman Josh Hembrough hit the NCAA provisional mark in the 60-meter hurdles for the second time this season, breaking the tape in 7.91. Hot on his heels was senior Brian Kaluf, who cracked his career-best with the sixth-fastest time in school history at 7.95.
Freshman Chris Thoman and senior Andrew Rademacher paced the pole vault, clearing matching heights of 5.05 meters (16-06.75). The mark is just shy of Rademacher's career-best, but smashed Thoman's previous high of 4.90 meters. Sophomores Lance Moe and Adetayo Adesanya won the high jump in similar fashion, leaping 5.09 meters (6-10.00). Again the mark was just 0.1 meters off of Moe's career best, and broke Adesanya's previous mark by 0.3 meters.
Purdue rounded out its event sweeps in the men's triple jump as junior Nolan Petties bounced 15.08 meters (49-05.75), while senior Rayland Currie marked 14.52 meters (47-07.75).
Senior Jh'Rome Tuggle, junior Stephen Bach and freshman Shane Crawford took home event victories for the Old Gold and Black as well as Tuggle won the 200-meter dash, Bach topped the 800-meter run and Crawford led the 60-meter dash. Tuggle broke the tape in 21.76, Bach clocked a season-best time of 1:53.24 and Crawford hit the NCAA provisional mark of 6.74.
Purdue is off next weekend and returns to action at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on February 8-9.
