Boilermakers Finish Second at Mercedes-Benz Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - In the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships, the Purdue women's golf team fired a 288, which is one of the program's top ten low rounds of all time. Unfortunately for the Boilermakers, Florida also fired a final-round 288 to finish in first place, five strokes ahead of second-place Purdue. Maria Hernandez finished as the low golfer for Purdue in a tie for eighth place.

The Boilermakers had four golfers finish in the top 30 individually. Hernandez (T-8th) finished two-over par with 215, after carding a 72 on Sunday. Christel Boeljon also fired a final-round 72, finishing in 13th with at total of 218 (+5). Freshman Junthima Gulyanamitta carded a 78 on Sunday to total 220, falling to a tie for 15th after opening the tournament with a season-low round of 69. Fellow freshman Maude-Aimee Leblanc had the low final round for Purdue with an even-par 71, her third round of par or below this season. LeBlanc finished tied for 27th with a total score of 222.

Junior Stephanie Oukeo scored her lowest round of the tournament on Sunday with a 73. She tied for 53rd with a total of 227.

Florida's Sandra Gal and Auburn's Cydney Clanton tied for first place with tournament totals of 210 (-3), but Gal took home medalist honors by winning the playoff. They were two of only four players to finish below par. Caroline Hedwall of the Swedish Jr. National team and Stacy Lewis of Arkansas tied for third with scores of 211 (-2).

The Boilermakers beat four teams ranked ahead of them in the Golfweek rankings, Auburn who finished fourth with a team total of 879, the host team, Tennessee who finished in sixth place with a total score of 883, Denver who was seventh and Alabama who finished 10th.

The 54-hole championship was held at the Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. The course is a winding par-71, 5,932-yard stretch that provided a tough test for the participants.

The Boilermakers compete again Oct. 26 to 28, at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. The Purdue men's team will also compete at the Landfall Tradition as men's and women's tournaments are run simultaneously.
