WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermakers led 7-5 after six innings but could not close the door on Indiana State as the Sycamores defeated Purdue 12-7 at Lambert Field on Wednesday.
Purdue rallied from a four-run deficit but could not maintain the late lead, surrendering seven runs in the final three innings. The loss was the third in a row for the Boilermakers and 11th in 13 games.
Trailing 4-0 after three innings, the Boilermakers scored four times in the fourth inning - all with two outs. A two-out double by Jon Moore and a single by Spencer Ingaldson put Purdue on the scoreboard. Successive hits by Alex Jaffee, Ryne White and Jeff Mojzik resulted in three more runs, tying the game at 4-4.
ISU scored a single run in the fifth, but Purdue responded immediately with two runs in the home half of the inning. A double by John Cummins, a walk to Kyle Lauderdale, and a double steal set up Moore for a pair of RBI. Moore tripled to left-center to drive home Purdue's fifth and sixth runs of the game.
A lone Purdue run in the sixth on a Mojzik sacrifice fly, which plated Jaffee, gave the Boilermakers a 7-5 lead heading into the final third of the contest.
The two-run lead would not last long as the Sycamores scored four times in the seventh inning, and then added three insurance runs in the ninth to secure the win - ISU's fourth over a Big Ten opponent in four tries this season.
Purdue used five pitchers in the contest, combining to allow 13 hits, nine earned runs, five walks and two hit batters. Connor Sestak (0-1), who pitched 1.1 innings as the third Boilermaker to take the hill, was hit with the loss.
Jaffee ended the game with three hits, two runs and one RBI. Mojzik drove in three runs on one hit while walking twice. Moore had two hits, scored a run and drove in two, and White picked up three hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
The Boilermakers stay at Lambert Field this weekend for their final home Big Ten series, a four game set against the Iowa Hawkeyes beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 11.
