Junhasavasdikul Wins The Big Ten Championships Individual Title

The Purdue men's golf team finished third at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The Boilermakers shot rounds of 299-292-304-301 (1196), finishing just four strokes behind Michigan State and Minnesota who are Co-Big Ten Champions. Purdue senior Pariya Junhasavasdikul won medalist honors, holding on to his lead with an even-par 71 on the final day to finish with a four-round total of 285 (+1).

Junhasavasdikul shot rounds of 69-72-73-71 (285) and never relinquished his lead in the three-day tournament. He is the first Big Ten individual champion for Purdue since 1967, when Steve Mayhew won, and the 14th overall for the Boilermakers. Junhasavasdikul was named to the Big Ten All-Championship Team.

Sophomore Tom Oliver finished tied for 17th after firing a 74 on Sunday. He was 19-over par for the 72 holes.

Senior Bobby Bennett tied for 24th place overall. He posted an 80 on Sunday and was 22-over for the tournament. Senior Peter Richardson carded a 79 in the final round to finish 23-over par which tied him for 27th place.

Freshman Vince Nadeau finished 26-over par with a 77 on Sunday. He finished 37th overall.

The tournament was held at the Ohio State Golf Club Scarlet Course, a par-71, 7,444-yard layout. The Boilermakers finished third in last year's event.

Michigan State will receive the Big Ten automatic bid into the NCAA Championships based on the final Golfweek rankings. Purdue is ranked 49nd in the latest Golfweek.com poll. Michigan State was the top-ranked team in the field at No. 26 and Minnesota is ranked No. 29. Purdue now awaits word on selection to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships. The Boilermakers could be selected to one of three regionals. The top 10 teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships.
