Boeljon Leads Purdue To A Second Place Finish

The No. 8 Purdue women's golf team recorded the lowest round of the Big Ten Championships on Sunday with a 288 but it was not enough to overcome a 23-stroke deficit. Host Michigan State (1188) won the event and the Boilermakers were second with a team total of 1201. Purdue had four golfers in the top 10, including sophomore Christel Boeljon who finished second.

Michigan State's Rachel Meikle won medalist honors and was the only golfer in the field to finish below par. Her final round 71 gave her a four-round total of 284, four-under par. Northwestern took third place (1220), 19 strokes behind Purdue. Ohio State was fourth (1227) and Indiana finished in fifth place (1244).

Boeljon carded a final-round 74 to finish five-over par with a total score of 293. The total is the third lowest 72-hole individual tally in school history.

Sophomore Maria Hernandez, the highest ranked individual in the field (No. 7) moved up to fourth place after firing a two-under par 70 on Sunday. Her tournament total of 297 was nine-over par.

Senior Myrte Eikenaar tied for 8th overall. She finished the three days at 17-over par. She carded an even-par 72 in the final round.

Freshman Stefanie Endstrasser also fired a 72 on Sunday and finished 10th overall. She finished the three days at 18-over par. Sophomore Stephanie Oukeo carded a final round 77. Her four-round total of 320 tied her for 39th overall.

Senior Caroline Haase finished 56th after a final round 78 that gave her a tournament total of 330. All six Purdue golfers recorded rounds in the 70s on Sunday.

The tournament was held at the Forest Akers West Golf Course, a par-72, 6,237-yard layout.

Purdue was the top-ranked team in the field and finished first in last year's Big Ten Championships. Purdue now awaits word on selection to the NCAA Women's Golf Championships. The Boilermakers could be selected to one of three regionals. The top 10 teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Women's Golf Championships. Purdue finished ninth in last year's NCAA Championships.
