March 20, 2007

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Purdue men's golf team claimed their first tournament title of the season today after firing a score of 287 this morning, for a three round total of 849. The Boilermakers won by an astonishing 15 shots over their closest competitor.

California finished second after surging up the leaderboard with a third round 288 for an 864 total. Fresno State posted a 300 this morning to remain in third place with a team score of 866.

Purdue senior Pariya Junhasavasdikul lead the Boilermakers through the first two rounds and that did not change today. He fired the second-lowest score of the day, a four-under 66, to finish in second place at -10 for the tournament.

Sophomore Tom Oliver continued his stellar play with an even-par 70 this morning, which moved him into a tie for 10th. Senior Bobby Bennett (T26th) posted a final round 74 and freshman Ryan Thomas (T61st) rounded out today's scoring with a 77. Senior Peter Richardson fell back into a tie for 29th after shooting a 79.

However, Purdue freshman Vince Nadeau had a solid finish as an individual. He shot 75 this morning to tie him with six others for 17th place.

John Streibich of Xavier went very low this morning with a seven-under 63, giving him medalist honors. He shot 67-69 yesterday and finished the tournament at -11. Streibich was able to pass Junhasavasdikul by one shot as second round leader Brett Lederer of Long Beach State fell back into a tie for 6th with a final round 78.

The Boilermakers will look to carry this momentum into next week as they travel to Austin, Texas for the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. The event starts March 26 and lasts two days. Log on to purduesports.com for more on the Purdue men's golf team.
