MIAMI - A fifth-inning sacrifice fly accounted for the lone run in Saturday morning's 1-0 contest between the Purdue softball team and No. 11 Stanford. The Boilermakers tallied one hit in the game, while the Cardinal managed just three hits en route to the win.
The Boilermakers got their first base runner when sophomore Kelly Miller (Indianapolis, Ind.) was hit by a pitch in the third inning.
Purdue put a runner in scoring position in the fifth, but could not score. Senior Erika Peterson (Irvine, Calif.) drew a one-out walk, then went to second on a Candace Curtis (Danville, Calif.) single, but both were left stranded.
Stanford broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a run on a hit, an error and a sacrifice fly. Missy Penna reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, then stole second before moving to third on a bunt single. A sacrifice fly by Anna Beardman put the Cardinal on the board, before a sacrifice fly ended the inning.
Freshman Ashley Barr (Meridian, Idaho) drew a lead-off walk in the sixth, then went to second on a wild pitch, but the Boilermakers could not convert on the RBI opportunity.
Missy Penna earned the complete game win for the Cardinal, while sophomore Ashley DiDomenico (Youngstown, Ohio) struck out two in the complete game effort for Purdue.
The Boilermakers continue the second half of their doubleheader with an 11 a.m. game against Marist.
