WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University men's and women's track teams won their 12th straight Gene Edmonds Cup on Saturday afternoon, topping Indiana State University 177-143. Both squads won the respective quad-meets as well as the men compiled 70.16 points, while the women posted 57 points.
Indiana State followed Purdue on the men's side earning 41.83 points, just ahead of Missouri, which posted 38. Illinois State brought up the rear with 14 points. The Tigers took second on the women's side with 40 points, edging out third-place Indiana State with 38. The Illinois State women finished with 29 points.
The Boilermaker men set 11 personal bests on the day, headlined by senior Rickey Pinkney's time of 7.80 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, which fractured his previous school record by just .01 seconds. Junior Keith Hopkins tied the previous record in the event and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships, while classmate Brian Kaluf completed the 1-2-3 finish for the third straight time this year with a personal-best time of 8.03 seconds. Sophomore Jh'Rome Tuggle won a pair of events, taking home the 200- and 400-meter dashes with times of 22.29 and 49.37, and senior Terrell Thompson topped the field in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:20.13. Sophomore Stepehn Bach notched a 1:53.53 in the 800-meter run to take first place, while the men's 4x400-meter relay squad of Thompson, Tuggle and sophomores Andrew Smith and Zach Logan completed the men's wins in the running events with a time of 3:16.97. The men won a trio of field events as well as freshman Lance Moe cleared a meet best 2.01 meters (6-07.00) in the high jump, senior captain John Porter posted a height of 5.05 meters (16-06.75) in the pole vault and sophomore Nolan Petties lept an indoor-career-best 7.26 meters (23-10.00) in the long jump. Also scoring career best marks were senior captain Rayland Currie in the triple jump (14.84m/48-08.25), sophomore James Martzall in the pole vault (4.75m/15-07.00) and sophomore Bryce Simon in the weight throw (17.28/56-08.50).
On the women's side, the Boilers captured four first-place finishes, highlighted by a 1-2-3 finish in the mile run. Senior Corrie Whisner led the way with a time of 4:49.3, while junior Carrie Fett and freshman Katie Morrical placed second and third with respective times of 4:59.4 and 5:00.5. Junior captain Leah Kincaid won the 60-meter hurdles and triple jump and finished second in the 60-meter dash. Her time of 8.32 seconds in the hurdles was just .01 seconds off her school-record time, while she lept 12.23 meters (40-01.50) in the triple jump and raced to a time of 7.72 seconds in the dash. Sophomore Mallory Peck secured the Boilers final victory on the women's side, matching her career best in the pole vault at 3.96 meters (12-11.75). Sophomore Lauren Scott had a strong performance in the 400-meter dash, finishing second in 57.86, while freshman Ashlee Lengacher grabbed second in the 600-meter run in 1:37.59. Also earning second-place showings for Purdue were senior Lindsey Singleton, who clearned 1.63 meters (5-04.25) in the high jump and first-year Christina Madison, who marked 5.63 meters (18-05.75) in the long jump.
"It was another sensational meet for us," stated Purdue head coach Jack Warner. "Indiana State is a very balanced team and we're very happy to retain the (Gene Edmonds) Cup for another year. We set a school record and several PRs on both sides so we're really moving in the right direction this season."
The Boilermakers hope to maintain that direction next weekend as they travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational.
