WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's golf team showed steady improvement each day of the NCAA Fall Preview in Daytona Beach, Fla., but it wasn't enough to gain ground against a very talented field of opponents. Despite a final round team total (293) bested by only four other schools, the Boilermakers finished where they started on Friday, in 14th place.
Sophomore Maria Hernandez was Purdue's top finisher for the second tournament in a row. Her final round one-under 71 was good for a tie for 18th. Hernandez had scores of 78 and 73 in the first two rounds.
Sophomore Christel Boeljon finished tied for 29th with a final round of 73. She carded 74 and 77 in her first two rounds.
Senior Myrte Eikenaar finished tied for 56th with a 75 on Sunday while freshman Fabienne In-Albon had a strong finish with a final round 74, which placed her tied for 59th.
Sophomore Stephanie Oukeo posted a 77 for the second day in a row and tied for 63rd.
Third-ranked Georgia held onto its lead to finish first, one spot ahead of top-ranked Duke, who overtook Auburn in the final round. UCLA gained the most ground in the final day of competition moving from ninth place on Saturday to finish third. Tennessee's Nicole Smith stayed atop the individual leaderboard, shooting a three-round score of 211 (five under).
The NCAA Fall Preview was held at the LPGA International's Legends Course, site of the 2007 NCAA Women's Championships.
The Boilermakers don't resume action until Nov. 3 and 4 when they compete in the Hooters Match Play in Orlando, Fla.
