BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Boilermaker softball team managed just two hits in a 7-0 loss to Indiana on Saturday. Purdue will look to even the score with a senior day win in Sunday's rematch in West Lafayette, which is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
Indiana scored first as Rachel Terry sent a solo home run over the left field wall to start the home half of the second. An error, a double and a walk loaded the bases, before a sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
The Boilermakers used a fielder's choice, a single and a hit by pitch to fill the bases in the top of the third, but could not manage a run. Freshman Katie Mitchell (Crown Point, Ind.) reached on the fielder's choice. Senior Lauren Devich (Bloomington, Ind.) followed with a single to short center field, then senior Staci Falzon (Carlsbad, Calif.) was hit by a pitch. A pair of fielder's choices kept Purdue from scoring.
The Hoosiers added another run on two hits and an error in the fourth. With runners at second and third, Julia Hamilton reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing a run to score.
Purdue made a pitching change in the sixth, but it was of no effect as IU tacked on four runs on four hits and a Boilermaker error. Terry struck again with a bases-loaded two-run single. Sarah Padove followed with a single to left, plating two more runs.
The Boilermakers managed just two hits in the contest, one by Peterson and one by Devich. Indiana scored seven runs on eight hits and five Purdue miscues.
Mariangee Bogado (18-8) earned the victory for the Hoosiers, while sophomore Melissa Burns (Miami, Fla.) was saddled with the loss for the Boilermakers.
The teams will meet again at 1 p.m. Sunday in West Lafayette.
