COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Purdue women's golf team is tied for ninth place after the first 18 holes of the 2006 NCAA Women's Golf National Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
The seventh-ranked Boilermakers fired a 13-over 301 and are tied with UCLA for ninth place. Southern California leads the field with a 291. Arizona State is in second place and Florida is in third.
Purdue was led individually by Big Ten Golfer of the Year Onnarin Sattayabanphot. She fired a first-round 74 and is tied for 21st. Her round included two birdies and four bogeys.
Big Ten Freshman of the Year Christel Boeljon is tied for 33rd after a three-over 75.
Junior Myrte Eikenaar and freshman Maria Hernandez both carded a pair of 76s on Tuesday. The duo is tied for 46th overall.
Sophomore Whitney Frykman is tied for 86th overall after first-round 78.
The championships are being held on Ohio State's Scarlet Course, which was recently given a complete makeover.
After a stellar season, the Boilermakers are looking for their first national championship in the program's history. Purdue has won its last two tournaments and a school-record six events during the 2005-06 season. After winning the Big Ten Championships on April 30, the Boilermakers won the 2006 NCAA West Regional Championships in Auburn, Washington, on May 13.
Purdue is one of five schools to advance to the 2006 NCAA Championships in the last seven straight seasons. The other four schools are Arizona State, Duke, Stanford and USC. It's best finish at the NCAA Championships was a ninth-place showing in 2000.
Purdue teed off at noon in the first round. They will begin round No. 2 at 8 a.m. ET on hole No. 10.
