The Purdue men's golf team is in a four-way tie for sixth place after the first of three rounds of the NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional Championships in Chardon, Ohio.
The Boilermakers fired a first-round 291 and are tied with Kentucky, Minnesota and Texas. Oklahoma State leads the field after a round of 280. Northwestern is second after totaling 281.
The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships from May 31 to June 2 in Sunriver, Ore. The Boilermakers have advanced to four of the last five NCAA Championships.
Purdue was led individually by junior Bobby Bennett. Bennett fired a three-under 68 and is tied with four other golfers for second place overall. He played the last six holes at four under par with a bogey. The highlight of the round was an eagle on the par-five 18th.
Sophomore Santiago Russi is tied for 34th after a two-over 73. Russi's round included four bogeys and one birdie.
Juniors Pariya Junhasavasdikul and Peter Richardson are tied for 51st and 74th respectively. Junhasavasdikul fired a three-over 74 with five bogeys and two birdies. Richardson carded a 76.
Freshman Tom Oliver is tied for 122nd after a round of 80.
The event is being held in Chardon, Ohio and hosted by Cleveland State. Purdue is no stranger to the 7,085-yard, par-71 Sand Ridge Golf Club. The Boilermakers tied for fourth in the Cleveland State Invitational, held at Sand Ridge, on Sept. 13.
