The Purdue men's golf team fought through difficult conditions to finish third at the Big Ten Championships in Lake Forest, Ill., on Sunday.
The Boilermakers, who were in fifth place after three rounds, fired a final-round 306 to move around Indiana and Michigan State. Purdue totaled 1,170 strokes (+34) and finished one strokes behind Minnesota. Host school Northwestern won the event with a total of 1,160.
Purdue had two individuals in the top 10 spots.
Junior Pariya Junhasavasdikul, who was in second place after 54 holes, fired a final-round 75, the lowest on the team. He finished in third place and was one-under par over the four rounds. Junhasavasdikul also carded the lowest round of the week for Purdue with a 66 on Friday. He was named to the All-Championship Team.
Junior Peter Richardson tied for eighth place overall. He posted a 77 on Sunday and was nine-over over the 72 holes.
Junior Bobby Bennett and sophomore Santiago Russi both tied for 28th overall. Bennett shot a 78 on Sunday and Russi fired a 76. The duo was 19-over par for the tournament.
Freshman Tom Oliver finished 24-over par and tied for 39th overall.
The tournament was held at Conway Farms Golf Club. The track is a par 71, 7,168-yard layout. The Boilermakers finished fifth in last year's event.
Purdue is ranked 42nd in the latest Golfweek.com poll. Northwestern was the top-ranked team in the field at No. 31. Minnesota is ranked No. 33. Purdue now awaits word on selection to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships. The Boilermakers could be selected to one of three regionals. The top 10 teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships. The Boilermakers have advance to four of the last five championships.
