The Purdue men's golf team is in third place and merely two strokes off the lead at the Big Ten Championships in Lake Forest, Ill.

The Boilermakers fired a first-round 284 and then followed it up with a 286 in the afternoon. Their total of 570 is two strokes behind tournament leader and host Northwestern. Michigan State is in second place with 569 strokes.

Purdue has three individuals in the top 15 spots at the halfway point of the event.

Junior Pariya Junhasavasdikul is tied for second place overall. He fired an even-par 71 on Friday morning, but then turned his game up a notch. In the second round, he carded a team-low 66. His second round included five birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the par-5, 14th.

Junior Peter Richardson was at even par through 18 holes. In the afternoon, he fired a two-over 73. He is tied for 11th overall with a total of 144.

Freshman Tom Oliver played his best two rounds of the season. He posted scores of 72 and 74 and is tied for 14th overall.

Junior Bobby Bennett and sophomore Santiago Russi are tied for 31st and 35th respectively. Bennett posted a 70 on Friday morning and an 80 in the afternoon. His morning round included four birdies over a five-hole stretch from holes 10 to 14. Russi totaled rounds of 78 and 73. The tournament is being held at Conway Farms Golf Club. The track is a par 71, 7,168-yard layout. The Boilermakers finished fifth in last year's event.

Purdue is ranked 42nd in the latest Golfweek.com poll. Northwestern is the top-ranked team in the field at No. 31. Minnesota is ranked No. 33.

The third round will consist of 18 holes on Saturday. The final 18 holes will be on Sunday.
