In cold, windy conditions, the Purdue men's golf team is in second place after 36 holes of the 2006 Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Boilermakers, ranked 39th in the latest Golfweek.com poll, got off to a slow start with a 310 in the morning. As the weather warmed, so did Purdue, firing a 288 in the afternoon. Indiana set the pace from the opening tee. The Hoosiers fired a 301 in the morning and tournament-low 287 over the second 18 holes to lead the field by 10 strokes. Purdue is second with a total of 598, and Notre Dame is third with 607.
Purdue was led by junior Pariya Junhasavasdikul, who showed tremendous improvement during the day. Junhasavasdikul carded a 78 in the morning. He shaved nine strokes off the total in the afternoon for a 69, second best of the day in the field. He is in fifth place overall.
Sophomore Santiago Russi is tied for sixth after a total of 148. Russi had a 77 over the first 18 holes and came back with a 71.
Junior Peter Richardson is tied for 20th after rounds of 78 and 75. Freshman Michael Randle totaled 154 after back-to-back rounds of 77. He is tied for 23rd overall.
Freshman Tom Oliver shook off an 82 and fired an afternoon 73. He is tied for 27th overall.
The invitational is being held at the 7,083-yard, par-72 Kampen Course. The Kampen Course is a Pete Dye design and will host the 2008 NCAA Men's Golf Championships.
This is the third year Purdue has hosted the event. The Boilermakers placed first in 2004 and were runners-up in 2005.
The field includes Indiana, Iowa State, Louisville, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Toledo, Wichita State and Wisconsin.
The final round will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning.
