CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Boilermaker softball team put up 10 runs on 13 hits en route to a shutout victory over Jacksonville at the Worth Invitational on Friday. Senior Diana LaRiva tossed her fifth career one-hitter and set the Purdue career record for strikeouts in the 10-0 win over the Dolphins.
After posting just one run in its previous game, the Boilermakers wasted no time filling the runs column, scoring five runs on three hits and an error in the opening stanza. Sophomore Ashley Hall (Noblesville, Ind.) reached on an error by the shortstop, then stole second, before moving to third on a single to right by senior Tricia Lilley (North Canton, Ohio). Lilley moved to second on the play as the Dolphins threw home to keep Hall from scoring. A ground rule double to center by junior DaQueta Johnson (Ontario, Calif.) scored both runners. Senior Becky Stone (Belleville, Ill.) walked, while Johnson stole third on the play. Stone stole second to put two runners in scoring position with two outs for junior Erika Peterson (Irvine, Calif.). Peterson delivered on the RBI opportunity with a three-run shot over the fence in center field.
The Boilermakers tacked on two runs on three hits in the second as Johnson sent a two-run double up the left line. The hit drove in senior Staci Falzon (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Hall, who each tallied one-out singles up the middle.
Purdue put two runners on in the fifth, as freshmen Katie Mitchell (Crown Point, Ind.) and Kelly Miller (Indianapolis, Ind.) posted singles, but could not convert them into runs on the scoreboard.
A sixth-inning triple up the left line by Lilley added two more runs for the Boilermakers. Lilley's three-baser drove in senior Kristen Schell (San Diego, Calif.), who reached on a fielder's choice, and Hall, who walked. Mitchell plated Lilley with a single to short. Freshman Lauren Stanovsky (St. Louis, Mo.) posted her first collegiate hit with a single to center field. Sophomore Tara Palmer (Pearland, Texas) followed with a two-out single through the left side to load the bases, but a caught foul ball kept Purdue from adding to its 10-0 lead.
The Dolphins went down in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the Purdue victory.
The Boilermakers scored 10 runs on 13 hits, including two-hit efforts by Hall, Lilley, Mitchell and Johnson.
Senior Diana LaRiva (Tustin, Calif.) allowed just one hit in the contest, marking the fifth one-hitter of her career and the 31st in Purdue history. LaRiva set the career record for strikeouts with four in the contest, moving her career total to 548, besting Leighann Burke's tally of 545. Katie Dobson was charged with the loss for Jacksonville after allowing three runs in the opening one third of an inning.
Purdue returns to action at 1 p.m. Friday when the team takes on Villanova.
