Impressive Start

BROWNS SUMMITT, N.C. - The Purdue women's golf team leads the highly talented pack after the first round of the 2006 Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summitt, N.C.

The eighth-ranked Boilermakers fired a 295 on Friday and lead the field by three strokes. Only three teams broke 300 in the first round. Top-ranked Duke fired a 298 and is in second place. N.C. State is third (299). Sixth-ranked Georgia and No. 16 Florida are both tied for fourth place after totals of 300.

Purdue had four individuals in the top 14 of the individual standings.

Purdue was led by senior Onnarin Sattayabanphot, who fired an even-par 72 on Friday. Sattayabanphot racked up three birdies and three bogeys during her round. She is tied for fourth place overall.

Freshmen Christel Boeljon and Maria Hernandez both won tournaments during the fall season. The duo is tied for eighth overall after rounds of 74. Boeljon and Hernandez each notched four birdies and six bogeys on Friday.

Sophomore Whitney Frykman carded a three-over 75 in the first round. Frykman is tied for 14th place overall.

Junior Myrte Eikenaar fired a 79 on Friday. She is tied for 53rd overall.

The 54-hole event is being held on the Bryan Park Champions Course.

This is the ninth year for Bryan National Collegiate. Purdue has played in the event four times. It's best finish was eighth in 2003.
