CLEARWATER, Fla. - North Carolina State topped the Purdue softball team 2-0 in the final game of silver bracket play at the USF/Adidas Invitational on Sunday. The Boilermakers tallied four hits in the game, but could not manage a run.
The Boilermakers put runners aboard in each of the first three innings, but could not manage to put a tally on the scoreboard. Senior Tricia Lilley (North Canton, Ohio) registered the first hit of the game with a single in the opening stanza.
NC State scored an unearned run on one hit and two errors in the third. Jennifer Chamberlin reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, then advanced to second on the play, before scoring on a fielding error by the right fielder as Jennifer Patterson singled through the right side.
Sophomore Tiffany Krcelich (Granger, Ind.) and senior Staci Falzon (Carlsbad, Calif.) posted one-out hits in the fifth, but a fielder's choice and caught stealing kept them from rounding the bases.
The Wolfpack combined three singles for another run in the sixth. Lisa Nentwig picked up the RBI.
Purdue went down in order in the seventh to give NC State the victory.
Falzon, Krcelich, Lilley and sophomore Ashley Hall (Noblesville, Ind.) accounted for Purdue's four hits. NC State scored two runs on seven hits and three Boilermaker miscues.
Megan Dalthorp earned the complete game victory for the Wolfpack, while junior Brooke Baker (Schererville, Ind.) was charged with the loss for Purdue, despite striking out four in the complete game effort.
The Boilermakers return to action at noon on Wednesday, when they play a doubleheader against George Mason at the E.C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla. The team then continues its spring break trip at the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, Fla., on Friday.
