The Purdue men's golf team is in sixth place after the first round of the 2006 Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande.

The Boilermakers fired a first-round 287 and trail Alabama by seven strokes for first place. Georgia is in second place after a 281. Florida (284), Arizona State (285) and Texas (286) round out the top five.

Five individuals posted rounds of 68 to place themselves atop the leaderboard. Georgia's Brendon Todd, Arizona State's Lenn Park, Florida's Brett Stegmaier, Texas' Farren Keenan and Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin all were four under par.

Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul posted a three-under 69 on Sunday. His round was the second-lowest on the day and ties him for sixth overall. Junhasavasdikul posted a 33 on the back nine after a 36 on the frontside.

Sophomore Santiago Russi is tied for 10th after a first-round 70. He is had a pair of 35s on Sunday. Michael Randle is tied for 25th after a first-round 72.

Junior Peter Richardson is tied for 56th after a 76. Bobby Bennett fired a 77 and is tied for 64th.

The 16-team event is being hosted by Purdue. The tournament is being played on the 6,945-yard, par-72 River Course at the Westin Rio Mar Country Club.

This is the sixth year for the Classic. Georgia Tech was the 2005 team champion and Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares took home top individual honors.

The second round begins on Monday at 7 a.m. EST.
