WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - All sophomore Jennifer Lavers was trying to do was improve her consideration time for NCAA's. In doing so, she broke a 12-year-old varsity record in the 200-yard breaststroke Sunday at the Boiler-Make-It Invitational.
Lavers' time of 2:15.83 eclipsed the previous mark of 2:16.02, which was registered by Heidi Reynolds in 1993.
This year's Boilermaker team has erased several longtime school records. Senior Erica Chandler topped Susan Wolfle's 14-year-old marks in the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley, and junior Carlene Takaki beat Kim Fritsch's 100 and 200 butterfly varsity records, which were both set in 1994.
Lavers was pushed by Notre Dame's Jessica Stephens, who won the race in 2:15.84.
Also improving their chances for NCAA Championship consideration this weekend were junior Susan Hentschel and sophomore Stacie Lesneski. Hentschel recorded season bests of 50.09 in the 100 free and 23.06 in the 50 free, while Lesneski went 2:01.57 in the 200 butterfly.
The NCAA Championships take place at the University of Georgia, March 16 to 18. Purdue's championship roster won't be known for approximately two more weeks.
