WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue tennis player Mallory Voelker led the Boilermakers in victories over the weekend at the WMU Super Challenge in Kalamazoo, Mich. The freshman recorded three singles and two doubles wins en route to a 5-1 record in the hidden-dual tournament.
Playing at No. 3 singles, Voelker first defeated Christine Skoda of Kansas 6-3, 6-4. In her second match, she beat Cecile Perton of Indiana 6-1, 6-3. She finished with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) win over Nazli Ghazal of Northwestern.
At No. 1 doubles, Voelker teamed with sophomore Brooke Beier to win two of three matches. They beat Feriel Esseghir and Georgia Rose of Northwestern 8-2, and Malena Remynse and Rattiya Hiranrat of Western Michigan 8-2. Their lone loss came by a 9-7 score to Beatrix Csordas and Dunja Antunovic of DePaul.
Also competing in singles at the WMU Super Challenge were: Beier (2-1); freshman Randi Schuler (2-1); freshman Anna Dzeva (1-1); senior Brittany Minna (0-3); and freshman Whitney Reys (0-3). Minna and Schuler went 0-3 in doubles, as did Dzeva and Reys.
At the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., Purdue junior Hala Sufi posted a 2-2 record. Sufi, ranked 73rd in the nation and seeded third in the 32-player tournament, won her first-round match over Olga Klimova of Kansas State, 6-3, 6-4. She lost her next match to Sun Devil Rebecca Rankin, and went 1-1 in consolation matches.
The WMU Super Challenge and ASU Thunderbird Invitational brought the Boilermakers' fall season to a close. Purdue will resume competition Jan. 14 at the UVA Invitational in Charlottesville, Va,
