FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. - Behind two all-conference performances, the Purdue Boilermakers placed eighth at both the men's and women's 2005 Big Ten Championships at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.
David Rae and Lindsay Zinn turned in all-conference efforts, leading their squads to eighth-place finishes, moving both the men and women up from their 2004 result.
Rae, a senior from Naperville, Ill., finished ninth in the men's 8K event, crossing the finish line in 24:41.6, 48 seconds better than his previous best effort at a conference championship (25:29.1 in 2002).
The individual men's champion was Simon Bairu of Wisconsin, who timed in at 23:31.7. The Badger team had all seven competitors finish among the top eight runners, easily claiming the team title with 16 points, far ahead of second-place Ohio State's 101. Purdue's men's squad scored 235 points.
Zinn, a senior hailing from West Chester, Ohio, ran a 21:33.5 on the championships' 6K course, finishing 12th overall. Zinn's time cut 48 seconds off her former top time at the Big Ten Championships (22:21.0 in 2004).
The women's champion was Illinois' Cassie Hunt, while the team champion was Michigan with 42 points, while the Fighting Illini placed second with 60. The Boilermaker women scored 180 points, finishing just shy of Iowa's seventh-place 170.
Corrie Whisner finished 27th for the Purdue women with a 22:05.5, while Kaleena Cappel's 22:41.5 was good for 40th in the individual standings.
Fourth across the line for the Boilermakers was Carrie Fett with a 49th-place 23:01.7, and freshman Elle Lammers placed 52nd with a 23:11.6 in her first Big Ten Championships. The final two runnes for Purdue were Brooke Woodruff with a 64th-place 23:38.2, and Laura Farley's 24:03.3 for 70th.
The Purdue men grouped together after Rae, with Justin Stadt finishing 52nd with a 26:11.5 and Justin Gauthier running a 26:25.1 for 56th. On their heels were Michial Jacob, who finihsed 58th with a 26:29.0, and Eric Hammond, whose 26:36.8 put him 60th.
The non-scoring Boilermakers on the men's side were Zach Wilder, who placed 65th with a time of 26:57.7, and Joshua Robinson, who crossed the line with a 27:48.3 for 69th.
The eighth-place finish for the Purdue men was their best showing at the Big Ten Championships since placing seventh as a team in 1998. The Boilermaker women had not finished as high as eighth since an eighth-place finish in 2002.
