WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - No. 20 Purdue fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 2-1, in double overtime, on a cold and dreary Friday afternoon at the Varsity Soccer Complex. The game-winner was delivered on a penalty kick by Kelsey Shaw in the 108th minute.
The only bright spot of Purdue's day was the pink uniforms it was wearing in support of breast cancer awareness month. Needless to say, the Boilermakers won't be donning those jerseys again, but head coach Rob Klatte refused to blame his team's fashion statement for its woeful play.
"The reality is we stopped playing soccer after we scored our first goal; we let them back into the game and it cost us," said Klatte. "The good news is we have the opportunity to redeem ourselves Sunday against a very good Illinois team."
Midfielder Jill Sarbaugh scored the Boilermakers' lone goal in the 25th minute. Sarbaugh blasted her shot from the top of the 18-yard line and watched it curl over the head of Iowa goalkeeper Erin MacIssac. Purdue's goal was the only blemish on MacIssac's day, as she finished the match with 12 saves.
The Iowa defensive line played an outstanding game for its goalkeeper, helping fend off 34 Purdue shots. Their offsides trap also worked brilliantly against the Purdue attack, as the Boilermakers were called offsides a season-high 10 times.
Hawkeyes defenders also worked hard in and around the goal box to clear out nine Purdue corner kicks.
Iowa was relaxed offensively for most of the match, but sped up its attack and outshot the Boilermakers, 7-1, after Purdue took the lead. Manon Engelhardt scored the game-tying goal in the 38th minute off assists from Jackie Kaeding and Ashley Schlueter.
Purdue wraps its home season Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against the Fighting Illini.
